Va birders
I am thinking about sending something like the following to different list
serves, to try to get support for the CBBT. Wouldn't it be great if we
could help them!
-----------
Birders,
There is legislation pending in Virginia, SB 192, that would eliminate the
Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel commision and merge the CBBT into the other
three bridge-tunnel complexes in the area. The motivation for the
legislation is to speed up development of the eastern shore of Virginia.
For forty years the CBBT has given birders almost free access to the rock
islands at the ends of the tunnels, while the other three complexes have
been very difficult to get onto. Historically, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge
Tunnel has been an exceptional birding location. Although there are post
9/11 restrictions in place, birders still have access; if this legislation
passes it is likely that birding the CBBT will cease forever.
There is a simple online petition to oppose SB 192, and more infomation,
at:
http://www.savethebridgetunnel.com/
Over 5400 people have signed. Please support this effort and sign the
petition. If you know anyone in Virginia that would be sympathetic please
forward this email to them. A national response may be as important as a
state response.
Thank you from Virginia
-----------
I'm sure this can be improved upon, please feel free to do so. Can y'all
help out by picking three list serves from birdingonthe.net, and sending
this? If anyone has contacts at the national level and can get the word
out, that would be great.
The hearing has been postponed until this Thursday, so there is still time!
