[va-bird] spotting scope: carry-on or checked luggage?

All,

I hope this isn't off-topic. If so, please reply off-list. I am going to fly to California and plan to bring my small spotting scope and tripod. I think they will fit in my bag, which can be carried on or checked. I would prefer to carry it on with me.

Does anyone have any recent experience with airport security? Have you brought a scope and tripod in a carry-on bag? Thanks!!
