Bird Banding: Theory and Practice

At its February 15 meeting, the Friends of Dyke Marsh will present a program on
bird banding. You all are welcome.

Monica Tomosy from the Bird Banding Laboratory at the Patuxent Research Refuge
will talk about the information on the bird bands, and how the lab uses the
massive amounts of data gathered by bird banders.

Mike Quinlan, a volunteer bird bander at Maryland's Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary,
will describe banding projects and techniques, and demonstrate the use of
equipment at banding stations. He will have a slide show depicting scenes from
a fall migration songbird banding project at Jug Bay. We will see some
excellent close-up shots of birds banded there.

For more information on the program and about Dyke Marsh, please go to our web
site: www.FODM.org.

At the meeting, we will have information about Northern Virginia locations
where you can learn more about banding birds, and where you can volunteer.

The Dyke Marsh meeting will be at Huntley Meadows Park in the Visitors' Center
on Wednesday, February 15, at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.

Directions: Huntley Meadows Park is three and a half miles south of the
beltway. Take the Route 1 south exit. This is a new exit. Go about three and a
half miles on Route 1 to Lockheed Boulevard. Turn right onto Lockheed Boulevard
and go about three blocks, until the road takes a sharp right. Instead of
taking the sharp right, turn left into the park. We will be meeting in the
Visitors' Center. The telephone number there is 703/768-2525, and their web
site is http://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/maps/huntleymap.htm.
