On Saturday, February 12, Northern Virginia Teen Bird
Club founding members Cody Vaughn and myself
accompanied Mr. Fred Atwood to Huntley Meadows Park.
There was quite an abundance of sparrow activity in
the reeds by the boardwalk and the Red-winged
Blackbirds were already calling, creating a somewhat
festive atmosphere despite the frigid temperatures.

Highlights included a Barred Owl in the parking lot, 3
immature Red-Shouldered Hawks, 3 Bald Eagles (2 imm.,
1 adult), 2 Red-headed Woodpeckers, a flock of Gadwall
and, most of all, a female Peregrine Falcon, banded on
both legs. On her left leg, a green/black band with a
G on top and 3 on the bottom, and on her right leg a
mettalic band of some sort. The green/black band
indicates, according to one source, that the bird was
banded in the Eastern United States, we still dont
know where...can anyone lend a hand?

Good Birding,

Alex Robbins
