Howdy!
Saturday afternoon at 1:30 Feb 5.
The lake has open water near the island and it
was crowded with three species of Aythya ducks.
The light on them was stunning, revealing the
brilliant colors on the heads of the males.
Ring-necked 200 male, 25 female (Difficult to
count because of their diving, but this is about
right after several counts).
Especially-handsome Redheads 8 male, 1 female
Lesser Scaup 6 male, 6 female

Also present were:
Ruddy Duck 5 female, 6 male
no mergansers!
8 pairs of Mallards
4 Black Ducks
1 Pied-billed Grebe
4 coot
4 great-blue heron
1 great-black-backed gull
25 herring gull
65 ring-billed gull
I saw no eagles in the 1/2 hour I was there.
About 160 Canada Geese were on the golf course.

Also, at Quantico Marine Base this morning, while
conducting a point-count survey (7 minutes at
each point), I found 8 red-breasted nuthatches in
4 of the 22 sites sampled. This is more RBNU than
I have seen anywhere this winter.

All the best
Fred
