VA BIRDers,
Kim Peacock and I noted the following at the Montressor Road area today from
about 1500 to 1800.
No. Harrier - 5 incl one adult male
Red-tailed Hawks - at least 11
Rough-legged Hawks - at least 6 described as
adult male, intermediate
adult female, intermediate (in tree with adult male at sunset)
Light phase first winter male
Intermediate phase first winter male
Intermediate phase first winter female
Dark phase intermediate first winter female (prob.) - a beautiful bird with
slightly yellowish-white eyes, yellow feet and lightly gray-banded undertail;
the head was solid dark chocolate apparently ruling out a juvenile bird, the
flashing white underwing trailing edges lacked significant patterning.
Am. Kestrel - 1
Short-eared Owl - 1, flying over first winter bird retreating
Great Horned Owl - 1
Horned Lark - ca. 60
Lapland Longspur - 1
Am. Tree Sparrow - ca. 15 w/ at least 2 Field Sp mixed in
Also on our travels this afternoon we noted an E. Towhee, Fox Sparrow, and
Purple Finch on Creighton Road (also Loudoun Co).
