Evening All,

I did some casual birding around Fluvana County this morning =8B mainly
because I haven't birded around there before and was curious. I was mostly
in the car, but stopped roadside when ever it looked interesting. My route
started at dawn at Zion Crossroads. From there I worked my way south down
Rte 15 to Palmyra. At the boat ramp there I saw Purple Finches (2 female),
and about 40 junco. I then headed down to the Hardware River WMA via Rd. 64=
0
Rte. 6 and Rd. 646. Along the way I saw Cedar Waxwings (c.30), Eastern
Meadowlark (2) Red-Shouldered Hawk (1) House Finch (2). The road into
Hardware River WMA parking area was flooded out, but I birded around the
entrance area. Fairly quiet but saw 3 more Purple Finch (2 female, 1 male),
White-throated, Song and Field Sparrows (4). I stopped at Bremo Bluff
briefly - swamp sparrow below the bridge.

A nice little spot I came across was near Rds. 656 and 654. There is a
bridge over the North Creek here. A small swampy area was mostly frozen ove=
r
but looked good. Here I saw Winter Wren (1), White Crowned Sparrow (3 imm.)
Eastern Towhee (1 male), Red-Tailed Hawk (3), Song Sparrow (10) and
White-throated Sparrow (20). The sparrows were mainly in a small cattle
"yard" where there was spilt grain in feed troughs (could be viewed from th=
e
road).

My last stop (technically in Cumberland County) was the Columbia boat ramp.
More Field Sparrows (5), Song (20), White-throated (10), Junco (30),
Red-Shouldered Hawk (1).

Not a complete list of everything I saw but the highlights. Enjoyable
morning out.

Cheers,

Arun Bose
