Burke Lake was all frozen on Saturday AM except
for the usual patch of open water in the middle
out beyond the marina.
Here is what I observed at about 10:15 AM.
320 Canada Geese (no snow goose), one with an
orange neck tag Y3F9 with white letters.
2 coot
8 female common mergansers
9 ruddy duck
3 male ring-necked duck
no mallards
1 female common goldeneye
1 great blue heron
3 herring and 25 ring-billed gulls
1 Female pileated woodpecker eating holly
berries. This was very intersting to watch. She
often hung upside down on the branches like a
chickadee. I don't think I've seen them eat
holly berries before.
1 hermit thrush eating berries in the same tree.
1 Winter Wren next to the parking lot of the
VDGIF boat ramp.
All the best
Fred
