Rough-legged hawk, CHARLOTTESVILLE
Yesterday, while I was driving home from work at 4:40 p.m., a mature
female Rough-legged hawk crossed Interstate 64 at a low altitude just in
front of me, about a half mile east of Exit 121 (Fifth Street). As I
passed underneath, I was impressed by the size of this bird, a bit larger
than our abundant local red-tails. I could clearly see the golden chest,
black belly, and long, slender, whitish underwings with bold dark patches
at the wrist. She was moving southwesterly.
