Lisa Shannon and I went to look for the Selasphorus hummingbird this morning
at the Mary Ripley Garden, along Independence Avenue SW (in Washington, DC)
between 7th and 9th Street. We were there from 8:20 to 9:20 and did not see
it. After a trip to Teaism restaurant on 8th Street just north of D Street,
we returned, fortified by Chai, Chocolate, and Cookies. We spent about 15
minutes there and still did not see the hummingbird.
Rats.
We then drove down to Roaches Run where Lisa spotted a pair of Canvasbacks
and 7 Lesser Scaup among the geese gulls, and Hooded Mergansers. No
Green-winged Teal today. An adult Red-tailed Hawk had one or a few barred
feathers on each side of the chest and showed a rather white-looking
underside to the tail (the upper surface was definitely red) when it perched
facing us from the other side of the water.
Hunting Creek (around 2 pm) at the stone bridge had single file processions
of Canada Geese walking gingerly across the ice, on the mud flat west of the
bridge. Close to the east side of the bridge were about a dozen Ruddy ducks
with a male Canvasback and a male Lesser Scaup; most of the ducks were
sleeping in the "warmth" of mid day. The usual gulls and geese were
present, as were a pair of Green-winged Teal and a pair of Wood Ducks
alongside the Mallards, Black Ducks, and Hooded Mergansers. Off Bellehaven
Picnic Area we saw Northern Pintails and two adult Bald Eagles.
