I got out for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon to Riverbend. On the river
there were Lesser Scaup, Ring-Necked Duck, Bufflehead, and Canadas and
Mallards, of course. There were also two Am. Coot diving for weeds. They were
being hounded by Canadas for the plants they were bringing to the surface. All
of the waterfowl took off in giant flocks as a adult Bald Eagle came thru. He
alit on a tree top, on the MD side, and was soon joined by a second BAEA.
In the field up on the hillside there were lots of EABL, a couple of
Red-shouldered Hawks, a Hermit Thrush and all the usual birds. There was also a
flock of a dozen or so Red-winged blackbirds, all females it seemed. Does
anyone know if they just have not molted, or are they juveniles, or just
happened to be a flock of females? I've never seen this before.
28 species all together.
