FreeLists / va-bird / [va-bird] when to clean birdhouses?

Hello all,

My mom recieved a bird house this past fall as a gift, and upon hanging it up, 
a bird took residence right away.  It appears to be a female house finch, and 
she's been there since October.

Her question is (and I didn't know how to answer it since I've never had a bird 
house):  When should she clean it out?  In order to make sure that nesting 
birds actually use it eventually, should she kick the finch out?  What is the 
bird house etiquette for house cleaning?
