We birded Dutch Gap on this beautiful morning with Jim Foxworth and now that
most of the ice is gone the ducks have moved closer to the road.
Aside from the usual..Mallards, Gadwalls, Am Wigeons, Ring Necks, No Shovelers,
Wood Ducks and the ever present Canada Geese, we saw two male Redheads and a
pair of Pintails.
Near the boardwalk we saw a pair of RS Hawks and they stayed in the same area
even though we were fairly close and we spotted what may be their nest.
About 50 yards past the end of the boardwalk we saw the pair of Barred Owls
that hang out in that area and we hope their nest tree is in close by. Two
years ago they used a tree about 15 feet from the boardwalk so they don't seem
very concerned about people.
Oh yes, even though the USDA killed 450 of the Black Vultures back in August
becuse they disturbed the boaters we estimated that the usual 200 or so were
hanging around the boat dock.
