[va-bird] January Thaw and Robins

Monday, February 3
The January thaw has arrived at last -- not in January but the first
weekend of February. And with this much welcomed thaw where average high
temperature during January in our part of Virginia was only 31 degrees,
American Robin are arriving in great numbers.
This past Saturday my husband and I took a drive down through Prince George
and Surry County's for a visit to Hog Island where we saw thousands upon
thousands of robin, most feeding in the very wet, flat wide open
fields. At 8 a.m. this morning upon arrival at my office on central
grounds at the University of Virginia the trees and ground were filled with
them. They are still moving through, some stopping and joining the chorus
of Song Sparrows. A definite nice change from the cold, wintery days of
January.
