I birded the Route 1 corridor in Woodbridge, VA yesterday morning (8am
to noon) between Occoquan NWR and Leesylvania State Park and tallied 60
species. With a little more effort I am sure I could have hit 75. I
did not find any rarities; there are just a lot of birds around.
Waterfowl numbers were good, although the ice has mostly left the river
and the birds were spread out. I found 15 species: tundra swan
(Leesylvania), Canada goose, mallard, black duck, green-winged teal
(Metz wetlands), shoveller (Veterans park), gadwall (Veterans park),
common goldeneye (Leesylvania), lesser scaup, greater scaup (Occoquan),
canvasback (Occoquan), bufflehead (Occoquan), common merganser,
red-breasted merganser (Leesylvania), and hooded merganser (Veterans
park). In Occoquan refuge I found 7 species of sparrow (tree, swamp,
field, song, savannah, white-throated, white-crowned). A winter wren
here burst into song, a nice harbinger of spring.
A dramatic difference from last weekend was that I saw only 2 bald
eagles. With the ice gone it becomes a lot more difficult to see them
without a lot of effort of scanning tree lines.
