The results of the 4 Virginia Big Sit circles (a survey, sponsored by the New
Haven, Connecticut Bird Club, where birds are tallied from a 17 foot diameter
circle) conducted on October 13, 2002 were posted last fall, but many people
have probably not seen the entire report, so here's a brief summary.

There were 136 circles from 35 states and countries. There were 554 sitters
and 663 species recorded. The overall winner was Tlacotalpan, Mexico with 119
species. An incredible showing at Cape May produced 111.

Virginia's composite total was 119 and ranked for the United States only
behind Texas, California, Connecticut, New Jersey and Florida.

The highest Virginia circle total was at Kiptopeke, with 63 (though the
previous year was 73) and there were only 18 circles with higher totals in
the United States and 8 of those were in California and Texas!

This year's event is planned for October 13th. For more information, check
