[va-bird] Re: Off-topic Discussions

Despite the fact that I'm participating in the off-topicness (word?), I'd like
to make a comment (no offense Ian). I think all of us take interest in learning
about the world around us, as evidenced by our interest in this email list. But
by staying subject specific, we respect those who registered to hear about
birds and make it easier to find the information that we want (we know we can
go to a certain source and get certain information). The context of this list
is birds, thus anything else is irrelevant. The point of subject specific lists
is soon lost when off-topic issues are introduced and if you spend much time on
quality online message boards, you understand that this is a common issue that
has to be dealt with by moderators. There are many other venues for
discussing/exchanging information on the internet or otherwise and I'm sure
there's even another email list that would be perfect. Ok, that was my spiel,
no more off-topic from me, I promise.:-) --Josh

Maybe not bored with winter birds, but bored with "I
had three male Cardinals at my feeder today....", etc.
This is not meant to offend ANYONE on this Listserve
and I'll probably be "blackballed" after this, but
some of us take pleasure in expanding our knowledge of
the world around us ( even though it may not pertain
DIRECTLY to avian species that we may 'tick' on our
county and/or state lists, etc ).
I apologise to reponding to the Listserve on this,
but I feel strongly about the implied "irrelevance"
regarding the subject matter. As far as I can tell,
the "relevance" of a subject depends entirely on who
is sending it.......
