It seeme to me Silver Lake used to offer a great variety of waterfowl
however in the past few years that seems to have declined. Has anyone else
noticed this trend and if so are there any ideas on the cause. I know they
began stocking the lake a few years back which is one possible (probable)
connection.

I took a little time last evening on "my way home" to check out three
of our larger lakes. Waterfowl abundance and diversity this winter
has not been great. However, last evening I found a better variety
than I have seen all winter.

At Silver Lake there were: Canada Geese, Mallards, four American
Wigeons, and two male Northern Shovelers. I didn't notice the P-b
Grebe that is almost always there.

At Lake Shenandoah there were: more Canada Geese, more Mallards, many
coots, three female and a male Hooded Merganser, about 15 Ring-necked
Ducks, and a female Canvasback.

At Lake Campbell (at Massanetta Springs) there were: more Canada
Geese (you're starting to get the picture?), more Mallards, and four
beautiful male Redheads.

A lot of the smaller ponds here are frozen over and that usually
makes birding the larger lakes a little more productive.
