Hi All
I had my first ever Winter Humming Bird to day. I saw the bird at about
eye level from a distance of about 25-30 feet as it flitted above my
bird bath fountain
I called to my wife and before I could get to the door she had a humming
bird feeder out and filling it. I took it out and hung from tree near the
fountain. I saw the bird fly past feeder and it perched briefly in a
Shrub that has little pink
flowers on it now. We call it a Apple Japonica. I was able to view bird
from a
distance of about 10 feet. My ability to distinguish the bird's color
and markings was greatly compromised. No sun at all I was able to
conclude only that it had a green head, back and Tail. the tip of the
tail had l white band. The blacks dots
on throat Looked like a Female Rufous. I could not see and rufous on
side or in tail. The breast looked to be white The bird looked more like
a calliope except for black dots on throat. I was using Paterson's field
guide to western birds.
The bird then went to feeder drank for about 2 minutes and left. I
first saw the bird at 1400 to day and last saw it at 1435 I hope it will
come back
I stayed pasted to the window all afternoon and didn't see it again. I
will Post
if I can see it again. I don't want anybody making a wasted trip
