[va-bird] [Re: Eurasian Wigeon Information]

Karen & VA Birders,

I am very interested in finding out details on the mate of this Eurasian
Wigeon. Is the bird definitely paired and if so, is the female an
American or a Eurasian Wigeon? If someone can get some pictures of the
pair, it would be quite useful in determining the species of the female
and/or documenting a pair of Eurasian Wigeon in Virginia. As far as I
know, there is no documentation of Eurasian Wigeon breeding in North
America. There is much speculation that it does occur however since
there are always Eurasian Wigeon around in the winter (more so out west
than in the east). Any information that can be provided is useful.
Thanks.

Sue

Yes! The Eurasian Wigeon is still at Christopher Farms. My husband and I
viewed this beautiful bird with his hen yesterday around 1:30pm. As we
entered Christopher Farms from the Holland Road entrance we traveled to
the
back side of the pond in one of two areas that you can park and view the
lake
without trespassing on private property. We thought we saw it in the
distance
so backtracked to the other viewing area which is right at the entrance
to
Christopher Farms. The Eurasian flushed from the shoreline and he had
magnificent views of it close up. Also present were 4 pair of American
Wigeon, a pair of Hooded Merganser and at least a dozen Mallard. At one
point
the Eurasian pair were swimming very near and American pair in the
bright
sunshine. What a beautiful sight. Darn! Why didn't we have a camera!
