VA BIRDers,
Whilst looking at gulls at the Prince William Co dump just after noon today,
I discovered Jon Little doing the same thing! So, we stared at the larids
and found at least one Thayer's Gull (firsr winter, bill all black except for
just a small mm of horn color near the base) and an Iceland Gull (first
winter also, white rump, the bill may have a little pink near the base,
decidedly a bit smaller than nearby first winter Herrings). Found another
Thayer's later, but it could have been the initial bird. Reasonably good
photos taken of the two interesting species. Curiously, no Lesser
Black-backed Gulls were noted (so, I guess I must pay another visit?) The
totals were (not too larids many today):
Black Vulture 15
Turkey Vulture 8
Ring-billed Gull ca. 500
Herring Gull ca. 200
Thayer's Gull 1
Iceland Gull 1
Great Black-backed Gull 20
crow sp (both kinds heard calling) 150
E. Starling 1500
