VA BIRDers,
I scoped 3 Long-tailed Ducks (nee Oldsquaw) on Belmont Bay late this
afternoon. They were associated with ca. 1000 Lesser Scaup that were in a
small raft in the bay. Also noted were Tundra Swan (15), Northern Pintail
(1), Canvasback (2), Redhead (1), Ring-necked Duck (8), Bufflehead (20),
Common Mergansers (20), Red-breasted Mergansers (50), Ruddy Duck (500) and a
single Pied-billed Grebe.
Viewing from the Belmont Bay marina I spotted a single Lesser Black-backed
Gulls floating with the many Herring and Great Black-backed Gulls.
Earlier in the day, Jay Keller and I visited the Lorton area (Fairfax Co)
and highlights were E. Towhee, American Tree Sparrow, Savannah Sparrow, 3
Fox Sparrows, and 10 White-crowned Sparrows mixed in with many Field, Song
and White-throated Sparrows.
