Greetings and Happy New Year to all:

For the past couple of years I have tried to bird at the Kerr Dam and area
on the first day of the year.  Since Monday weather was rainy, I went on 2
Jan 2007.

Seen on the lake above the dam was a large flock of gulls.  When do you not
want to see a Bald Eagle?  It's after you drove 5 miles around the lake and
took 10 minutes to get your scope out of the car and set up and was just
scanning the gulls when an immature Bald Eagle flew over head and they all
took off and then settle back down further out in the lake.
However below the dam, I did see Ring-billed, Bonaparte's and 2 Herring
Gulls.

Above the dam there was a flock of 7 Red-breasted Mergansers and Horned
Grebes swimming about everywhere and the Common Loons were like wise.

Double-crested Cormorants were in good numbers both below the dam and on the
lake.
A few Great Blue Heron were seen feeding along the rocks below the dam since
the water was not being let out.

At Palmer's Point Day Use Area, I had good looks of Common Loon up close as
well as a good look at a Red-throated Loon.  I was NOT able to find the
Pacific Loon however.
A flock of 10 Buffleheads swam up close for a great view of them.

On Palmer's Point Rd going to Hwy #1, I found on a large pond on the left a
small flock of Ring-necked Ducks along with 2 Mallards and 2 American
Wigeon.
