I started the New Year by birding at Lynnhaven Inlet for several hours midday.
Highlights were having my first ducks of the year be Gadwall and Wood Duck
(instead of Mallard) and my first goose being Brant (instead of Canada Goose);
my first raptor of the year being an adult Bald Eagle; American Bittern flying
over; observing a Clapper Rail at low tide for about 20 minutes; four Black
Skimmers; a single American Oystercatcher; and a very cooperative Savannah
Sparrow that I watched for at least ten minutes. Complete list of species
follows.
