VA Birders,
I went to the big pond at Roaches Run, Arlington Co., across the G.W.
Parkway from National Airport today, and I counted 16 HOODED MERGANSERS as well
as 6 PIED-BILLED GREBES there. I also saw 1 male BUFFLEHEAD in the pond and
several GREAT BLUE HERONS, mostly sitting in trees as the water was quite high.
Then I drove down to Daingerfield Island, turned around, and headed
north, stopping at Gravelly Point before heading home. There must have been at
least 500 CANADA GEESE on the lawn there. A large flock of over 100
BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRDS was also there, along with at least 6 RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS.
Good birding,
Val Kitchens
Arlington, VA
