Today I visited Hog Island WMA and Sunken Meadow Pond both of which are
in Surry County. The highlight bird of the day was a drake Eurasian
Wigeon found among the many waterfowl at Sunken Meadow Pond. The bird
was not a classic adult male. It showed the rufous head and buffy
forehead of a male but the body appeared to be in a molt, showing only
splotchy gray coloring. I attempted to find photos of an immature male
on the internet but came up empty. Other waterfowl at Sunken Meadow
included Tundra Swan, Gadwall, Ring-necked Duck, Hooded Merganser and
American Wigeon. There were several Bald Eagles overhead.
At Hog Island, the Canada Goose flock was immense but the only other
goose I found among them was a single Snow Goose. Highlights included
Tundra Swan, Northern Pintail, Brown Pelican, Great Egret, Green-winged
Teal, Red-breasted Merganser, Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, American
Kestrel, Great Black-backed Gull, Herring Gull, Bonaparte's Gull, Pine
Warbler, Savannah Sparrow, Swamp Sparrow and Field Sparrow. Good
birding.
