Sig Stiles (up from St. Mary's County, MD) and I had two good looks at the
female rufous hummingbird in the Ripley Garden on the Mall this morning
(Thursday, 01-06-05). She is a chunky little thing (for a hummingbird, that
is),
plumper than the female rufous I'd seen previously (in Vienna and near
Petersburg,
in previous years).
She visited the feeder twice between 10:10 and 10:40 AM. A banded (bright
blue and bright yellow bands) mockingbird was the between-acts entertainment.
We
didn't see the common yellowthroat female previously reported.
