Today was a beautiful day even for a Spring Bird Count - could this be
Christmas Bird Count weather? I was sweating with a short-sleeved shirt
on as the temperature soared into the mid-70's!
I had fun covering the Dick Cross Wildlife Management Area in
Mecklenburg Co., Virginia, as part of the Kerr Lake NC/VA CBC organized
by Brian Bockhahn. Located just below the Kerr Lake dam, about 4 miles
north of the NC/VA state line, it's one of the best birding spots in
the Kerr Lake area. It reminds me a little of Brickhouse Road at Falls
Lake, which is also managed for wildlife.
Highlights:
seven raptor species, including
1 GOLDEN EAGLE (subadult) - first one I've seen in years!
3 Bald Eagle
five wren species, including
2 Sedge Wren
1 Marsh Wren
1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
5 Red-breasted Nuthatch
2 Common Yellowthroat
1 Palm Warbler
lots of sparrows, including
40 Field Sparrow (getting harder to find these days)
20 Fox Sparrow (always a treat to see)
butterflies:
4 Clouded Sulphur
(feel free to forward to VA-bird - I'm not subscribed)
