[va-bird] Evening Grosbeaks-Pine Siskins Warrenton

My wife and I stopped by a friends house just west of Warrenton over Bear
Wallow Mountain today and they had Evening Grosbeaks in the pines and other
trees in their yard and at the feeders. The best count I could get was 14-all
adult. I would have thought it wasn't cold enough for them to be around at this
time although it was definitely colder there at the foot of the mountains. They
said they've come every year for at least six years and stay most of the
winter. It was pretty cool seeing them at the window feeder from 3 feet away.
There were also Pine Siskins which controlled the feeders when they wanted to.
I
also saw a total of 12 White-crowned sparrows in the drive appearing to eat
fine gravel. My friends said they were eating some small plant growing in the
gravel-which didn't seem right to me, but closer observation with binoculars
confirmed that that was just what they were doing. Cardinals, Morning Doves and
3
Bob White Quail were doing the same thing throughout the time we were there. I
scarfed some of the plant out of the gravel and am transplanting it into my
driveway to see what happens. When I find out what it is I'll let you know.
