[va-bird] Charlottesville CBC highlights

I was hoping for a bit of sunshine for today's CBC held in the
Charlottesville area. Maybe the overcast sky and cool temps can explain
lower numbers in the downtown section of Charlottesville. Or, perhaps it
was loss of habitat in several areas including removal of underbrush and
large trees.
Working in the immediate downtown sector and Belmont neighborhood on east
side of the downtown mall, I managed to tally 35 species. Some of today's
highlights included:
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 1 in Riverview Cemetery
Golden-crowned Kinglet - Today they outnumbered the Ruby-crowned (13/7)
with bulk in Riverview Cemetery.
Brown Creeper - 1 in Riverview Cemetery
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker
Hermit Thrush - 1 (First I've had on downtown count in three years.)
Merlin - Seems to enjoy choice offering of pigeons along the West Main
Street corridor.
Sharp-shinned Hawk - two for the day
Red-shouldered Hawk - 1 in Riverview Cemetery
This past week while on a trip to Florida, I had a chance to photograph the
southern Florida subspecies of Red-shouldered Hawk. One in particular was
very small, almost that of our Cooper's Hawk. For comparison between the
much smaller and paler Florida subspecies and Eastern Red-Shouldered Hawk,
below are links to the photos:
