 ) finally 
put in an appearance at 2:00 p.m. this afternoon in front of the beach 
overlook at First Landing State Park.  No Pacific or Arctic Loons have been 
seen as 
of 2:30, unfortunately; the weather is downright hot, with lots of heat haze 
in the southwest breezes, and the loons are fewer than yesterday and mostly 
well out to sea.  Fort Story has been thoroughly checked during the day, with 
only a redpoll and a Lesser Black-backed Gull (at the Harbormaster 
Headquarters), 
and I was amazed to see a flock of ELEVEN American White Pelicans coming in 
off the ocean around 88th Street at 1:12 p.m. or so.  I cell-phoned 
grebe-hunters at First Landing, who watched the airborne armada glide right 
over Shore 
Drive, heading west!  A great way to start the year.  I haven't seen it 
mentioned on the internet yet, but there was one adult Little Gull on the 
Little Creek 
CBC, seen at Fort Story by several counters.  Bonaparte's Gull numbers are up 
a bit, maybe 500 today, mostly in small flocks.
