While birding in Carroll County, Va this morning I found a single
Ross's Goose in with a flock of about 75 Canada's on the New River
along State Route 52 which passes under the I77 bridge. I had seen
a white goose flying with Canadas last week but could not get a real
positive ID on the bird in flight. Today I was lucky enough to see
the birds feeding along the rivers edge. The Ross's was about half
the size of the Canadas and had the prominent pinkish bill and legs.
I did not observe the "grin line" but all other markings were very
clear and verified. This location is about 3/4 mile upstream of
Fosters Falls State Park.
