On the accurate measurement of number and species killed by collision with a
man-made, man-sited obstruction, the work of Herbert Stoddard at Tall
Timbers, FL in connection with the TV antenna near the research station is
essential reading. Only after Mr. Stoddard carefully mowed the entire area
within the "drop zone" AND "controlled" scavengers large in number and of
great variety, did the true carnage by species, number and time of year come
to light. Stoddard's early work and a follow-up by Todd Engstrom after the
height of the tower was lowered were published in various ornithology
journals. Peter Doherty
