Waterfowl were hard to come by in DC yesterday, January 13:
A flock of over 100 Scaup were in the Washington Channel near Ft. McNair
(as seen from the Hains Point loop drive) at around 11:30 a.m. They were
flushed by a Coast Guard boat and all took off across the river towards
National Airport. About 2 hours later I found most of the flock off
Gravelly Point, just north of the airport. Most of the Scaup were LESSER,
but at least three males were clearly GREATER. There were a few AMERICAN
COOT in the same stretch.
Otherwise, the only ducks of interest were 5 HOODED MERGANSER in the
Anacostia opposite the Navy Yard, and about 50 RUDDY DUCK in the Potomac
near the Washington Sailing Marina south of the airport. There was a "pod"
of at least 20 PIED-BILLED GREBE in the same general area, just off the
mouth of 4-Mile Run.
Only other birds of interest in DC on Monday were a large female COOPER'S
HAWK that was being harassed by crows in Kenilworth Park, NE DC, 3 EASTERN
BLUEBIRDS in the same place, and 2 PILEATED WOODPECKER in Kenilworth
Aquatic Gardens, where I don't usually see them.
