[va-bird] Short-eared Owls / Loudoun County

During a jaunt through Northern Loudoun a few weeks
back with Todd Day we noticed a nice chunk of suitable
habitat for Short-eareds. I've been staking it out for
some time and was finally rewarded today with some
some great looks at 3-4 of these guys in action just
before 5:00. Present for the previous days were 6-7
Northern Harriers, including a single gray ghost that
came into roost shortly before dark on Sunday. From
Purcellville head N towards Hillsboro on Hillsboro Rd.
(Rt 690). Shortly after crossing over the Rt 7 Bypass
take a right onto Allder School Road. The fields on
the N side of Allder School, opposite the construction
entrance and immediately after the turn off of
Hillsboro Rd, are easily scanned with scopes and/or
binoculars without trespassing of any kind. The
distressing part is that this area appears to be
scheduled for development and will probably not remain
for many more seasons.......Ahhhh, progress.
