I agree with your observation that there are far fewer feeder birds this 
year.  I am participating in Project Feeder Watch and am able to compare the 
counts for this site over a period of years.  Like you, I only seem to get 
halfway customary numbers when the birds anticipate inclement weather (like 
this morning an hour or so before the snow flurries, which didn't amount to 
much).  Not sure why, but I have seen speculation in the literature that the 
effect of West Nile virus on songbirds has been much more extensive than 
first thought.
