The Augusta County CBC, held on Dec 28, resulted in an average number of
species (72) counted by 25 participants in 10 teams. Thanks to all
participants for your enthusiasm and capable efforts. Special thanks to
Beth and Harry Lumadue for hosting the talley supper and for that wonderful
soup. Highlights include a clean sweep of all 7 possible woodpeckers, with
Sarah Splaun and teammates getting the increasingly hard-to-find Red-headed
Woodpecker -- and they got two of 'em. Lisa Hamilton and Crista Cabe found
only our second CBC Merlin, reported dining on an Eastern BLuebird. Four
species of owls were identified by Allen Larner, who also found and
documented the 4th Ross's Goose in our county, this one being the first ever
recorded on this CBC. American Robins were everywhere in sizeable numbers
and we outdid our previous high count by 1200 birds for a record total of
2988. The species list is below, somwhat out of order. Total numbers and
further details can be found on the Audubon web page.
