I was thinking it might be handy to have a web calendar that we can use,
both for interesting phenomena and for keeping track of meetings and the
like. So I went ahead and installed one at
http://www.ghiapet.homeip.net/WebCalendar/ . I've already loaded it up
with a few phenomena and a couple of meetings, and given it a similar
look-and-feel to the page at
http://www.freelists.org/webpage/tryastronomy . (Just to be on the safe
side, since I borrowed & shrunk the graphics from that page, what's
their copyright status?) Anyway, take a look and tell me if it's useful,
and any other relevant feedback. In particular, I'm wondering whether I
should give everyone their own accounts on it (yet another pesky
username/password to remember!), or just leave it as is where everyone
sees the same calendar.
The built-in documentation is kind of spotty, but the main thing I'd
point out is that anyone can suggest an event to add to the calendar by
clicking the little screwhead-looking icons in the upper right of each
day, and filling in the info. You can use HTML in the full description,
but not in the brief description, or you can just put an URL in the
"Event URL" field. And try to give it an appropriate priority and
category; I'm intending that 'Meetings' be only for the proper Urban
Stargazers' monthly meetings; 'Events' be for other events e.g.
AstroFest, perhaps for trips out to darker skies, and for non-natural
happenings in space, e.g. things happening in the Cassini mission; and
'Phenomena' for natural astronomical phenomena, e.g. moon phases, meteor
showers, etc. Oh, and the last vital caveat, unless you know what you're
doing and have a special reason, leave "Participants" at just "Public
Access", and ignore my various test users that you could choose from. ;)
One less-vital caveat, I haven't gone over the yearly, weekly, or daily
calendar views for making the colours work as thoroughly as I have the
monthly view, so they could be downright hideous, or even just
invisible. I'll get to that, but meanwhile the month view is your safest
bet.
And if you think a web calendar is the most useless thing our club could
want, don't feel afraid to tell me that. ;)
