In this issue we remind you about the coming Environmental forum in
Tokyo on March 30 (I am one of the speakers, but that is no reason to
stay away---a bit of humor there!). Also about upcoming international
antiwar actions in April.
But first, a comment or two about whales, the war on terrorism,
and related issues. Then the links.
Remember that you can discuss any issue here:

COMMENTARY by paul: On the need to be both green AND left,
to beware of false cultural issues and the dangers of nationalism, and
willing to work together with others DESPITE differences.
http://www.arenson.org/2002_03_24_tokyoprog_archive.html#75039864
Note, in this essay I try to see the connections between many seemingly
disparate issues. I also express my frustration with many traditional
opposition groups as well as groups that play to the least common
denominator by getting into bed with the enemy (in this case
environmentalists who do not criticise the hypocrisy of the U.S.
in its anti-whaling stance).
-------------------------------------------------------------
INVITATION TO ATTEND THE INTERNATIONAL GREEN FORUM March 30 It's almost
time for the Second Annual International Green Forum, to be held from
10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Aoyama Gakuin University near Shibuya, Tokyo
in Building 6, Room 621. No reservations are required! A voluntary
donation of 500 yen will be requested at the door. Simultaneous
interpretations will be provided in English and Japanese.
The theme of the forum is "Towards a Green Transformation of Culture."
This is one of the major opportunities for for grassroots activists and
concerned citizens of all nationalities who are interested in any
aspect of the Green movement to meet together, share information, talk
to each other, and learn how to get involved. About half of each session
will be devoted to audience participation and discussion. We look
forward to seeing you there!

(3) Practicing What You Preach--The writer talks about why he is running
in the U.S. against both the Democrats and the Republicans.
While it is fashionable among some people who supported the
"lesser of the two evils" and now are blaming those who supported Nadar
for the fact that we have got Emperor Bush, this peace reminds us
that BOTH parties are the WAR PARTY, the anti-people party. Bush's
administration hasd its fair share of crackpots, but the BASIC POLICIES
of both parties is hardly distinguishable.

(6) FROM NEW ZEALAND--Peace Movement Aotearoa
How very appropriate that on the day the US government announces 'rules'
for conducting military tribunals for the prisoners from their war against
the people of Afghanistan, here the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade
Select Committee reports back to parliament on the Terrorism Suppression Bill.
The same is happening in Japan and other "democracies". Worth reading!

(7)Anti War Links We need to get together in Japan and try to organize
something. I am tired of hearing well meaning friends who say that
Japan should be leading the peace movement because of its experience
of Nagasaki/Hiroshima. The anti-war movement here is weak and divided
by traditional rivalries. Many of the young people unaffiliated with
the traditional groups seem to have the right idea, but we can all
learn from one another by working together!

Putting Community Back in the Domestic Violence Movement
In the eager pursuit of protection by the government, the domestic
violence movement has largely sidestepped the problem of the violent
and abusive nature of law enforcement in poor immigrant and U.S.-born
communities of color. The supposed privacy and sanctity of the home are
very relative concepts, whose application is heavily conditioned by
racial and economic status.
