URGENT!!! Proposed new copyright laws, (Copyright Arbitration Royalty
Panel = CARP), could well put Radio LavaLamp and tens-of-thousands of
individual, non-commercial and small market radio stations off the web.
This will lead to further consolidation of US, and by default, world
media into fewer hands. Please read and sign the petition to oppose the
CARP

(9) The US has been secretly sending prisoners suspected of al-Qaida
connections to countries where torture during interrogation is legal,
according to US diplomatic and intelligence sources. Prisoners moved to
such countries as Egypt and Jordan can be subjected to torture and
threats to their families to extract information sought by the US in
the wake of the September 11 attacks.

(10) The Moral High Road? Two Articles Which Lay That
Claim to rest
We want to believe that we are somehow different than "the terrorists,"
that we who live in so-called "free societies" have values that prevent
us from doing evil things, that "rogue states" and "evil axes" are a
species of government different than our own. Howard Zinn puts those
myths to rest in an earlier essay looking at how terrorism was committed
in the name of peace and freedom at Hiroshima.
Meanwhile, in her article (See zmag.org for information on how you can
be a znet sustainer), "Anti-Globalization | Anti-Fundamentalism", Judy
Rebick says that the claim that the United States is some kind of
liberator is contradicted by the role that U.S.-led corporate
globalization plays in creating the conditions that enable fundamentalists
like the Taliban to gain power in the first place. She also says that
"structural adjustment policies imposed by global organizations like
the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund resulted in an
increased poverty that hit women hardest. More importantly, the
suffering and cultural dislocation strengthen fundamentalism--whether
Moslem, Hindu or Christian--which has been the strongest opposition to
the monoculture imposed by U.S. multinational corporations." So much
for claims that the global capitalism and democracy live on the same
side of the street. They don't even live in the same neighborhood.

(12)SIX MONTHS LATER, THE BASIC TOOL IS LANGUAGE by Norman Solomon
Cameras have recorded countless defining moments. And six
months after Sept. 11, some nightmarish televised glimpses of
that day's horrors still resonate deeply. Visual images are
powerful. Yet there's no substitute for words that sum up what
might otherwise seem too ambiguous, upsetting or baffling. Words
attach meaning to events.
Since last fall, the biggest media buzz-phrase has been "the
war on terrorism." By now, journalists are in the habit of
shortening it to "the war on terror" -- perhaps the most
demagogic term in recent memory.

Thirty years ago I moved to Israel, intending to stay forever. I left
quickly, though, my Zionist impulses weakening as right-wingers
strengthened their grip on Israeli policy.
The segment of Zionism that initially attracted me at least had the
virtue of generating guilt. The Israelis I most admired understood an
uncomfortable truth: from the beginning, Zionism's focus on Jewish
survival blinded it to the equally legitimate rights of Arabs who,
inconveniently, already lived on the land.........

Those of us who opposed the bombing of Afghanistan warned that the war
between nations would not stop there. Now, as Tony Blair prepares the
British people for an attack on Iraq, the conflict seems to be
proliferating faster than most of us predicted. But there is another
danger, which we have tended to neglect: that of escalating hostilities
WITHIN the nations waging this war.
