MS. RV., TVA Lake
Shelby Co. TN
Tunica Co. MS
The Mississippi River had little to see through the fog this morning. A
single male Goldeneye was pulled out on the bank at Dacus Bar and was snoozing
away. The Ring-billed Gull number toped 40 birds and 2 DC Cormorants fished
below the dike. At TVA Lake, the Black Scoter finally woke up and was hanging
out with a bunch of Greater Scaup. Lesser Scaup numbers were up with about the
same number of Redheads and Canvasbacks. A single female Goldeneye has been
on the lake all week.
Gull numbers were up in the vicinity of the Tunica Dump. Many thousands of
Ring-billed Gulls can keep you busy for a few hours but there will be rewards.
Bonaparte's are few and far between, only immature Herring Gulls could be
found, no adults?? One Thayer's Gull was found along with a Franklin's Gull
and
the surprise of the day a first cycle GREATER BLACK-BACKED Gull. This bird
was first see standing on top of the landfill waiting for a dump truck to
unload. All I could see was this huge white head with a nickel cigar for its
bill. Finally the birds lifted into the air and the white head and rump
contrasting with its checker board back nailed the ID. This is my first GBB for
north
MS.
Twenty-one Sandhill Cranes flew over while I was looking at two of the
Rough-legged Hawks along with 12 Red-tailed Hawks (1 adult and 1 immature
Krider's) while many-many-many Geese flew over going in every direction.
Good Birding !!!
