[TN-Bird] Blount County Geese

After reading Tom Howe's posting this morning, we went back to Lillard Lane
to look closer in better light at the geese that we reported Friday evening.
We agree that one of the geese is a Ross's and would like for others to
confirm. See yesterday's posting for directions.
This goose is about 80% of the size of the Snow Goose. It's bill is smaller
relative to its head size and is gray on the rear half. Overall, this goose is
whiter. Each bird has gray streaking on its neck, but the gray-streaked area
is relatively smaller on the smaller bird. At the tail area, the smaller bird
has a narrow black vee from the tip extending a few inches frontward. Both
have a black spot at the top of their tails.
The geese were with several Canadas in a the field past the first barn, and
not past the second barn across from the partially constructed log house. When
we looked at 1:24 p.m., all of the geese had left. Geese are in these fields
all winter so they probably will be back.
Five Sandhill Cranes five over. Gail's brother said that five have been
around for a few days. Farther back on Lillard Lane, we saw three Sandhills
feeding in shallow water down on the left.
From the bridge on Miser Station Road between Louisville Road and Little Dug
Gap Road, we saw at least 25 Hooded Mergansers and one Belted Kingfisher. Most
of the mergansers flew. Some had been under the bridge.
We could not find the four Tundra Swans.
