[TN-Bird] Cove Lake State Park update

Due to work, not posted anything recently so thought I would give a little
update from Cove Lake State Park , Campbell County, (N. of Knoxville)
On Monday, I saw my first BALD EAGLE (adult) for the winter season.
Yesterday, there was ab adult pair in a Sycamore Tree near the main highway.
Duck numbers had been scarce so far this year. Yesterday there were good
numbers of several species, probably why the Eagles were around.
62 Hooded Merganser 3 Bufflehead 3 American Wigeon
16 Mallards 77 Gadwall - 2 Black Ducks as well as 53 American Coot.
This is the highest number of Coot I have seen there since before 2004 when
they drained the lake to kill the milfoil algae/fungus?. Was happy that maybe
it would be a good winter for waterfowl, but learned last night they started
draining the lake again to kill the algae this winter.
(Though Coot are not that significant, they are food for the Eagles, so the
less Coot- the less I saw the Eagles the past couple years in winter.) Only the
deeper water will remain mid lake, so dabbling "fowl" will be scarce.
Also present were 9 Red- Breasted Nuthatches in a single Pine with abundance of
cones. Several have been around since early fall, but this was cool to see
this many in one tree..
Ring-Billed Gulls put in an appearance for the first time this Winter season.
27
Canadian Geese are abundant right now. Have NOT had any Snow Geese yet this
season.
Data, as usual, to be entered in Ebird.
