Hiwassee Refuge
Meigs Co., TN

On Sunday, we visited Hiwassee Refuge from 3:00 to 5:20 p.m. An adult
Whooping Crane and a juvenile whooper were feeding in the corn field to the
south of the gazebo when we arrived. Eva from International Crane
Foundation was present and said they had just released the juvenile today.
It was DAR #46-07 and had been captured a day or so ago in Arkansas in a
private rice field. Before that Mike Todd had taken excellent shots of the
bird at Hatchie NWR in west Tennessee. Eva indicated that there were
currently about ten whoopers total in the Hiwassee Refuge area. The
juvenile moved to the far side of the embayment and gave us great looks for
an hour. It was a great afternoon in the upper 50s and the normally frigid
wind at the gazebo area was not too bad.
