Kyker Bottoms Refuge
Blount Co.
I spent an hour late today, 4:15 to 5:15 at Kyker Bottoms. There is
practically no water, as expected, and no waterfowl, except across the
street from the paved parking lot where 4 male HOODED MERGANSERS were
entertaining 3 females. Two GADWALL joined them as I was leaving. There were
few sparrows in the area; no white-crowneds were seen or heard. So, I went
to the blind, not expecting much, but had an hour to kill as my wife and son
were riding bikes. Very shortly after arriving a LINCOLN'S SPARROW made a
close appearance so I hung around and saw a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET and a
WINTER WREN. The blind is a great place to see whatever is there close up.
Another greenish bird was feeding low to the ground I assumed would be
another kinglet, but proved to be an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. I watched it
for a period of 25 minutes as it stayed low and hidden most of the time in
the asters and goldenrods. It was a female. I got a few poor pictures.
Before it went into hiding, probably for the night, it had a stint of
activity while calling a thin chip note that had the quality of a chipping
sparrow. Although some might think it to be a drab species, at this close
range it was strikingly beautiful.
Get out and enjoy the birds.
