TN birders,
Spent the bulk of yesterday at Reelfoot Lake in Lake Co in search of the
white-faced ibis. Stayed at Nancy's B & B, so was able to get an earlier
start.
Totaled 70 species for the county, including the ibis in the rice field
opposite to where it has been in the past on Choctow McCutcheon Rd in a ditch
that is perpendicular to C-M Road. The ditch is even with the last pond as
you
go toward Black Bayou. It did not show for me until 3:15 Central time.
Other highlights of the day:
Barn owl-my favorite N Amnerican bird-FOY
Canvasback-3 males from White's Landing-FOY
N Harrier-5f/2m-never get tired of that handsome male plummage
Red-shouldered hawks-the most numerous raptor, and their color was striking
in the sun
Thayer's gull-1st year-was with Nancy when I saw it fly in, but was unable
to get her on it, as the gulls were tucked together so closely-FOY
LBB gull-1st year-had good separation from the main group, and Nancy saw
also. From the 10,000 gulls reported earlier, we only had about 400.
However,
later in the day, the gulls were divided into roosts at the jct of Choctow
McCutcheon Rd and Hwy 78, and a few at the ibis spot, in addition to the
prison
location-FOY
Western meadowlark-had two to fly near the jct of CM Road and the road to
Grays Camp-FOY
Also notable was what was not seen, including no geese, no wh-crowned
sparrow, no Lapland longspurs(largest group of horned larks was only 12, but
most
groups were 2-5 birds), no vulture, no winter wren, and no house finch. Also,
had hoped to hook up with a com loon and horned grebe at White's Landing,
but even though a good variety of waterfowl was present, these two were not
seen.
Thanks to Nancy, Mark, and Mike who kept us posted as to the latest on the
ibis. Hope it stays for the CBC!
