Sightings Report 9 Dec '06, Shelby Farms area, Memphis, Shelby County TN
After our Memphis Chapter TOS search for ducks in SW Shelby County, I was
driving home through the farms and said "Why Not", I had a borrowed scope,
let's see whats in these waters. Highlights were Cackling Geese, Greater
White Fronted Goose(IM) at Patriot lake, and the Am. Black Duck on Pine lake
hanging with the Mallard flock.
Location: TN, Shelby Farms Patriot Lake
Observation date: 12/9/06, 12:55-1:35pm
Notes: Scoped the lake, cold as it was. Three good size gaggles of geese
one in the water at the end of the parking lot and two separate up on the
bluff past the visiters center. At first I thought i was seeing things when
some of the geese looked so much smaller than others. Then it hit me.
Cackling Geese. Much smaller standing next to its cousin the Canada. Shorter
beak by far. Noise they make is alot different. One other gGoose also stood
out on the bluff, an immature Greater White-Fronted Goose. He acted like he
belonged with the Canadians. Will try to go back tomorrow for pictures of
all.

Notes: Standing on the Dock of Beaver lake scoping out the visiters, a
rush of sound came in low over my right side. Three separate squadrons of
Ring-necked Ducks came screaming in to join those already in the water.
Impressive how much noise 40+ ducks make in a landing approach at break neck
speed and not a quack out of one of them.
