[TN-Bird] Sighting Report 6 & 7 Dec '06, Ensley Bottoms area, Memphis, Shelby County

Sighting Report 6 & 7 Dec '06, Ensley Bottoms area, Memphis, Shelby County
Location: TN 2 Mem, Riverport Rd Ponds / Swamp
Observation date: 12/6/06, 12:50-1:20pm
Notes: Cold day even at lunch time. The two main ponds that have water
are holding a nice group of ducks that seem to e staying for awhile. The N.
Shovelers are new guests today.
Number of species: 12
Gadwall 38
Mallard 13
Northern Shoveler 16
Hooded Merganser 46
Pied-billed Grebe 1
Great Blue Heron 1
Red-tailed Hawk 2
American Kestrel 2
Killdeer 9
Belted Kingfisher 1
Blue Jay 3
Northern Mockingbird 2
Location: TN 2 Mem,TVA PONDS
Observation date: 12/6/06, 1:25-1:45pm
Notes: The float of birds on the big pond is just getting bigger with
the cold weather coming in. Lsr Scaup the majority. Other birds all over
mixed in. Coots hanging out in 3-4 distinct groups. Sm pond has a group of
Coots and Mergansers.

Location: TN 2 Mem, Riverport Rd Ponds / Swamp
Observation date: 12/7/06, 3:55-4:20pm
Notes: Wind is roaring 25+mph and temp is in low 30's in the sun.
Surprising a lot of ducks in the small slough ponds being protected by the
high berms. Low water still.

Location: TN 2 Mem,TVA PONDS
Observation date: 12/7/06, 4:20-4:40pm
Notes: Thousands of "Blackbirds" coming in to roost in trees and reeds
and continually streaming overhead. Cold High winds out of the north had all
the waterfowl at the north end of the big pond in a tight packed float of
700+ birds. Couldn't count but could see what some were. Coots only one's
doing their own thing in the middle of the pond. Small pond had some coots
and a heron but the wind was bad here too.
