Reelfoot Lake area
Lake County
The gull resting area on Proctor City Road was swarming with gulls today. An
estimated 10,000 gulls were in the area counting what was swarming over the
prison. There was a constant trade back & forth from the prison to the flooded
field. 99% of the gulls were Ring-billed but there were a few Bonaparte's &
Herring Gulls in the mix and I got good looks at a first-winter Thayer's Gull
and a first-winter Lesser Black-backed Gull. Three Ross's Geese dropped in
while we were sitting there looking at the group. There were several flocks of
Snow Geese in the area flying around and a couple of flocks acted like they
wanted to land here but moved on. I also heard at least 2 Fish Crows here.
I never made it over to Van Works Road so I'm not sure if there are gulls there
or not but I would suspect that there probably are as several were there last
week. I made a quick run by to look for the White-faced Ibis at about 11:15 am
and there was no sign of it but it frequently disappears and then reappears so
timing is everything on it. 2 Western Meadowalarks flew across the road in
front of the truck on Hwy. 213 just east of the jct. with Hwy. 78. A very
cooperative adult Bald Eagle is also hanging arould in this area. We flushed a
Sharp-shinned Hawk from the ditch beside the road on Wray Loop.
Looks like it is going to be another exciting winter in the Reelfoot area as
usual. Hopefully some of these goodies (plus a few more) can be located for
the Reelfoot Lake CBC on the 16th!
Good birding,
