Dec 2.

Around noon today we pulled up to the Dennison compound, signed the
register and drove to the "HERE" sign. One woman was already in the
bushes checking a sparrow flock. We inspected the members of the flock,
(mostly Savannah Sparrows and Field Sparrows) for no more than 1 minute
when the BLACK-THROATED SPARROW popped right up in the open on a fallen
oak branch. This particular brush pile was about 25 yds toward the
Dennison house from the here sign.
On the way back we noticed a Red-tailed Hawk with too thick a belly band
to be a RTH. Upon closer examination it turned out to be a ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWK! This bird was located about five miles west of Belvidere TN on Hwy.
64. The bird was perched on a power line on the south side of the road.
On the way back to Sewanee we decided to check for the WHOOPING CRANES
near the Franklin County Jail in Winchester. We found 2 Whooping Cranes
and 1 Sandhill. To find this site, turn north on TN 16 off of US 64 in
Winchester. Turn right at the 2nd stop sign toward the National Guard
armory. Go past the armory and the jail. Keep driving (<0.1 mi) until the
small lake is visible on the right. Though fairly distant, the cranes are
close enough to be easily viewed with a scope. PLEASE DO NOT CROSS THE
FENCE TO GET CLOSER.

Good Birding!
